1. Locate information sources .
2. Find information within information sources using your keywords.

Now the Work begins!

1. Locate information sources

  In the previous step a list of possible resources was generated. Now it is time to physically locate and retrieve those information sources.

Print:

  Do you know how to use the online catalog?
Do you know how to access the public library catalog online?
Do you know how to search RILINK?
Do you know how the print resources are arranged?
Can you locate the books on the shelves?

Electronic:

  Do you know how to access online subscription databases?
Do you know how to access various search engines and directories?

2. Find information within information sources using your keywords

Print:

  Do you know how to use the Table of Contents and the index of a print resource?
Do you know how to use atlases and other subject-specific reference materials?

Electronic:

  Do you know how to use Boolean logic in developing a search string for online search tools?
Do you know how to look for search syntax rules for various search tools?
Do you know which search tool is best for your information need? Do you know how to search online databases?
Do you know how to use e-mail for an electronic interview?


Other:

  Do you know how to find people to interview or places to visit to visit, like museums or companies, that may provide information that pertains to your thesis?
