The Research Process
Thinking * Working * Reflecting

Synthesis

1. Work with your notes to organize the information from multiple sources
2. Present your information.

1. Work with your notes to organize the information from multiple sources.

Think about how the information from all of the different resources fit together.
Determine how you will synthesize and organize all of this information to address your thesis statement (task).

Print out the outline view of your note web.
Analyze your questions and answers and consider what subtopics can you create.
What topics are "similar"?
What conclusions can you draw from all of the information you collected?

Using Inspiration, organize your notes by subtopic.
Summarize the answers to your questions and the "summaries" will be linked to the appropriate subtopics. If you have any direct quotations, link them under the appropriate subtopics.
Reflect on this information and add your conclusions to the appropriate subtopic. Your web will follow this format:

main bubble = Thesis statement > subtopics > summaries > direct quotations > your thoughts/conclusions

Once you complete this web, view the outline. Does the outline make sense? Does the order of the information have a logical order that supports/proves your thesis statement? Make any necessary corrections then begin to create your final presentation.

The most important steps in synthesizing your information include:

Use your information to draw conclusions
Form judgments based on evidence
Create a logical argument
Organize and communicate your information in a way that makes sense
Present a coherent finished product

2. Presenting the Information

Now that you have created a logical outline, consider the best way to present the information. Will your presentation be a written paper, a graphic representation, an oral report, or a multimedia presentation.

Create your presentation!

Computer applications can help you organize and present information. Consider what technology tools will meet your needs:

Word Processor
Database
Desktop Publishing
Web Editor
Graphics Program
Presentation Programs
Spreadsheets
Video Programs
